DAI goes down in history: what you need to know about migrating to USDS and the Sky Protocol ecosystem

End of the DAI era: why the legendary stablecoin is going into history and what kind of beast is USDS?

The world of decentralized finance is experiencing a tectonic shift. One of the pioneers and mainstay of DeFi - the stablecoin DAI - officially ceases to exist in the form we are used to. MakerDAO, the protocol behind its creation, has launched a major rebranding, and Sky Protocol takes the stage with a new flagship - the USDS coin. We tell you what happened, why this is not just a change of sign and how not to lose your funds during the migration.

1. Historical rebranding: how DAI turns into USDS
Rumors have been circulating for a long time, but now it's official: MakerDAO is going into the past as a name, giving way to the Sky ecosystem. Along with this transformation, two key assets have undergone an "upgrade":

  • The legendary DAI changes its registration and becomes USDS.

  • The management token MKR transforms into SKY.

The most important nuance that should reassure holders: the exchange takes place strictly 1:1. This is not an "air" fork and not the issuance of a new coin from scratch, but a technical and brand modernization. For some time, the old and new stables will coexist in parallel, but exchanges and protocols have already begun the process of withdrawing DAI from circulation.

2. What's happening on the exchanges: a migration checklist
The largest trading platforms did not wait for users to come to their senses. Binance, Bybit, Gate, Bitget and HTX have already activated automatic conversion of DAI balances to USDS at a 1:1 rate. Trading pairs with the old stable are being delisted methodically.

To be specific:

  • Binance stopped trading all DAI pairs on April 7, completely blocking deposits and withdrawals of the old coin. USDS took its place.

  • Coinbase and Crypto.com (Cronos) also set hard deadlines: after the "hour X" DAI support will stop, and the remaining balances on the accounts will be converted automatically.

3. Is there a difference? What can USDS do that DAI couldn't
At first glance, we are dealing with the same over-collateralized stablecoin, pegged to the dollar. But the devil, as always, is in the details. USDS is DAI 2.0, tailored to the new realities of the crypto world.

Main differences:

  1. Regulatory compatibility. Sky Protocol was originally designed with institutions in mind. USDS code includes mechanisms for compliance requirements, up to the theoretical possibility of blocking funds at the request of regulators (a surprise for fans of anonymity).

  2. Extended functionality. Transition to USDS opens access to new ecosystem features: Sky Savings Rate (an improved analogue of the old DSR interest rate), Sky Vaults and other DeFi products through the Sky.money portal.

4. Step-by-step instructions: what to do if you have DAI
Your actions directly depend on where exactly the coin is stored.

  • If DAI is on a centralized exchange (Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, etc.):
Relax and do nothing. The platforms will convert your money into USDS themselves. The only risk is missing the withdrawal deadline if the exchange suddenly changes its mind, but the major players have already carried out auto-conversion.

  • If DAI is in your non-custodial wallet (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, etc.) or in DeFi protocols:
Here you need to act manually.

    1. Use the official Sky Protocol interface for on-chain swap DAI → USDS (ratio 1:1).

    2. Important! Exit liquidity pools or lendings where you placed DAI in advance. As soon as the protocol stops supporting the old coin, your assets may get stuck and you will lose profitability.

5. Why this event will change DeFi forever
We're not dramatizing, but the fact remains: we are witnessing the largest stablecoin migration in the history of decentralized finance. Along with DAI, giant liquidity pools from Curve, Aave, Compound, as well as billion-dollar balances on exchanges, are "moving" to USDS.

The rebranding to Sky Protocol is a marker. It shows the direction of development of the entire industry: decentralized stables are coming out of the "underground" and turning into hybrid instruments, friendly to global regulators and large capital.

The main danger now is passivity. Users who get stuck with old DAI in outdated pairs or protocols risk losing liquidity and profitability. Check your assets right now. There is no more DAI. Welcome USDS and the new era of Sky.
